Liverpool 2-1 Southampton

Liverpool 2-1 Southampton

Carabao Cup Third Round

Wow a match we can watch on terrestrial television.

Arne Slot fielded a much changed team which was full of exciting young and experienced talent.

It was great to see Isak get his first goal on 43 minutes after a lacklustre first 40 minutes.

Southampton equalised after a rare costly error by Endo which allowed Charles to slot home for Southampton on 76 minutes.

On 85 minutes it was Ekitike who stole the show for all the right and wrong reasons.

After Chiesa unselfishly set up Ekitike to score, our number 22 proceeded to remove his shirt to celebrate and earn himself a second yellow card followed by a subsequent red card.

It was a poor error of judgement, more so after picking up his first yellow card for throwing the ball away after a decision went against him.

This said, having listened to him speak in interviews this season, he has always been humble and talked about the "team" as much as his personal goals.

I like his hunger to be the best he can be, and I think Arne Slot's stern but necessary words after the match will have been taken on board and this young player will have learned his lesson.

I thought Mamardashvili was impressive in goal even though there was one notable error.

Although for me, the star of the show was Federico Chiesa.

Not only did he assist both goals but he was always a threat and his work rate was outstanding.

The main concern after the match will be the injury to our new young centre back Giovanni Leoni. He looked in considerable pain when being stretchered off and it does look like he may be side-lined for some time.
